What do you need on the final?

Enter where your grade stands and how much the final counts. You’ll get the exact score you need, for the grade you’re aiming at and every other letter, plus an honest flag if it’s no longer possible.

%

Your grade in the class right now, before the final.

%

How much of your overall grade the final counts for. Check the syllabus.

The formula

Your final class grade is a weighted average: the final exam counts for its weight, and everything you’ve done so far counts for the rest. Solve for the exam score and you get:

Needed on final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

Example: you have an 84% and the final is worth 25%. To finish with a 90%, you need (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108%, so an A isn’t possible without extra credit. To finish with an 80%, you need (80 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 68%.

If the result is over 100%, the target is out of reach on the exam alone. If it’s below 0%, you’ve already locked it in, even with a zero on the final (though skipping a final can break other course rules).

Common questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Take your target grade, subtract your current grade multiplied by the part of the course that isn’t the final, then divide by the final’s weight. With a current grade of 78%, a final worth 30% and a target of 80%, that’s (80 − 78 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 84.7%. The calculator above does this for every letter grade at once.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then that grade can’t be reached on the exam alone. It’s worth checking the syllabus for extra credit, dropped lowest scores, or a policy where the final replaces a low midterm. Also talk to your instructor early; they may point out options you missed. Otherwise, reset the target to the next letter down and focus on locking that in.

How do I know how much my final is worth?

It’s almost always in the syllabus’s grading breakdown, as a percentage (“Final exam: 25%”) or as points (“Final: 200 of 1,000 points”, which is 20%). If it’s not listed, ask your instructor or check the course site.

My class uses points, not percentages. Does this still work?

Yes. Convert first. Current grade = points earned so far ÷ points possible so far. Final weight = the final’s points ÷ total points in the course. For example, 540 of 600 points so far is 90%, and a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is worth 20%.

Why is my calculated grade different from what’s in my course portal?

Portals sometimes show a grade based only on assignments graded so far, without weighting unfinished categories, or they may not yet include dropped scores or curves. If the portal grade doesn’t reflect the syllabus weights, work out your current weighted grade by category first, or ask your instructor what your standing is going into the final.

Can a bad final grade affect my financial aid?

It can. To keep federal aid, you have to make Satisfactory Academic Progress, which your school measures with a minimum GPA and by the share of attempted credits you complete. Federal rules require at least a C average (or your school’s equivalent) by the end of your second academic year, and schools set their own completion-rate standards. A failed or withdrawn class can count against both. If you’re close, talk to your financial aid office before grades post.
